The Internet
The internet enables so much technology and functionality to be available to our fingertips, and it's pretty seamless. We hardly think about "the internet" itself and focus more on the technology we are using. The following rely on the internet:
- a website
- TikTok
- netflix
Generally speaking, if it's a website or app that gets its information from a source not already on your device, it's using the internet to get it.
Web Browsers
Web browsers are our windows to the information on the internet, and they allow us to navigate the web. Many browsers are available and at the time of writing, their popularity of use is as follows:
- Chrome - 61.8%
- Safari - 17.2%
- Internet Explorer and Edge - 7.1%
- Firefox - 4.8%
- Opera - 1.5%
Internet Crime
In addition to enhancing our lives, the internet also enables malicious users to commit crime. Whether it be fraudsters running websites that appear to be banking websites or internet shops that attempt to take your money in exchange for products that don't exist, you have to be on your guard.
Search Engines
Back in the good old days there used to be a few search engines in popular use. Currently, the search engine field is dominated by one big player: Google. If there were no search engines, we would be restricted to visiting websites that we already knew about, or those that were recommended by other people. Search engines allow us to search for web pages that match our search criteria.
